He explained that for someone to manage the time their staff efficiently, they have to first and foremost, be able to manage their own. Secondly, this job began developing his well-rounded safety and awareness skills. Cycling through busy, crowded, rush-hour stricken streets on a bike that offers the operator little to no protection forced Troy to learn very quickly what being fully aware meant. Equipment such as the types that a lift mechanics would work on require people around them to be fully aware of their surroundings and carry themselves and act in a safe and cautious manner. After a little less than a year, Troy was able to earn himself a promotion to a more indoors position as a dispatcher. During the interview, he stated, “It was a great opportunity to learn and develop crucial skill that still help me everyday, and being responsible for nearly hundreds of people was awesome in building confidence and my ability to manage people other than myself, and at the end of the day I am really happy I chose to take the offer presented to me.” He was basically saying, even if you find a position or promotion unappealing because of minor aspects, such as indoor/outdoor working preference, it could be very beneficial in getting you to where you want to be with you career in the near future.

Troy explained that this job required him to be responsible for the safety of himself and his tour group, while maintaining a light atmosphere and keeping his guests happy. To effectively do this, you must make sure people are both listening and paying attention, use a concise and clear communicative tones, and be very specific in giving directions. These three communication skills and habits were the biggest contributors to him ensuring the highest level of safety for his guests, the rest of his crew, and himself. From these three, the one particular commutation skill from guiding and exploring caves that still assists him today was to be very clear, concise and stern when giving direction. Just as being a bike courier had skills which were transferable to cave guiding, Troy was able to enter wildland helitack firefighting and not only use the most recently mentioned skill, but also further develop it.

Though upon first thought it may seem that there are not many skills developed as a bicycle courier that are relatable to being the lead of a lift maintenance team, it is apparent that consideration is not true. As a currier, Troy learned how to manage time efficiently through the responsibility of managing himself.

Another job that continued to build upon his safety and awareness skills was cave guiding. Most often, embarking on cave tours is relatively safe; but only thanks to the individuals that lead tours and study the caves themselves.
