Troy explained that this job required him to be responsible for the safety of himself and his tour group, while maintaining a light atmosphere and keeping his guests happy. To effectively do this, you must make sure people are both listening and paying attention, use a concise and clear communicative tones, and be very specific in giving directions. These three communication skills and habits were the biggest contributors to him ensuring the highest level of safety for his guests, the rest of his crew, and himself. From these three, the one particular commutation skill from guiding and exploring caves that still assists him today was to be very clear, concise and stern when giving direction. Just as being a bike courier had skills which were transferable to cave guiding, Troy was able to enter wildland helitack firefighting and not only use the most recently mentioned skill, but also further develop it.

Another job that continued to build upon his safety and awareness skills was cave guiding. Most often, embarking on cave tours is relatively safe; but only thanks to the individuals that lead tours and study the caves themselves.
