Summary

Going into this assignment, I was feeling slightly apprehensive about my interest in following a career in lift maintenance. It was a path of interest but I did not fully understand what exactly it was that a person in such a position did. After interviewing Troy and analyzing our discussions, I feel a lot more at ease in regards to chasing my ski resort career in that direction. Even though it may not be the position and department I decide to stay with and spend the majority of my time in, the experience and knowledge I could gain would become a strong asset to my career. From what I learned, it is important to assess opportunities and make well-devised decisions on exploiting them. On account of the Industries high turn-over rate, there is a large margin of advancement available; both within and not within a department. This is extremely intriguing to me, as it means I could obtain a position in this department easily and move up with in it in a reasonable amount of time. One of the few negative aspects that became apparent while conducting this interview was simply the fact that to become a certified lift mechanic, I would have to attend four more years of post-secondary schooling after completing my SROAM diploma. Along with the fact this is not overly desirable, I feel as if the ski industry pays millwrights far too little for the actual skill and knowledge base. Aside from having only a couple minor negative aspects, I found that this interview and report has allowed me to gain an appreciation for a career I was already fascinated by.
